Introduction

There are different services available in East Dunbartonshire for adults who have additional support needs.

Each team has different roles and eligibility criteria. 

The Local Area Co-ordinators can be accessed by people over the age of 14 who have a formal Autism or mild Learning Disability diagnosis – anyone can refer into this service. 

The Outreach team offer social opportunities in the evenings for those over the age of 16 with additional needs who reside within East Dunbartonshire.
Day service support is available both within the Allander Resource Centre and in the community provided by the Outlook team for people with a Learning Disability or Autism who have been assessed by Social Work as being eligible for formal paid day service support.

Local Area Co-ordinators

The Local Area Co-ordinators (LACs) work 1:1 with those over 14 with a formal diagnosis of autism and/or mild learning disability. There is no upper age limit and no time restrictions on the length of support given, providing the person is willing to engage in support.

If someone is under the age of 14 or awaiting an autism assessment then the team can still offer signposting to local services.

What can they offer? 

  • Support to try new groups or activities 
    -    Support with forms
    -    Benefit appointments & applications
    -    Finding volunteering 
    -    Preparing for transition from leaving secondary education
    -    Introductions to further education (e.g. accessing learning supports, bursary applications)
    -    Looking for training and qualification opportunities
    -    Finding employment (including work placements)
    -    Accessing local services (e.g. third sector, mental health support, advocacy)
    -    Thinking about independent living 
    -    Signposting for parents to local services

Eligibility: For 1:1 support the person needs to be over the age of 14 and have a formal diagnosis of Autism and/or mild Learning Disability, and live in East Dunbartonshire

Outreach

Outreach offer social opportunities in the evenings for those over the age of 16 who have an ASN and live in East Dunbartonshire.

What can they offer? 

  • Mondays – Bowling group (Kirkintilloch) & Monday social club (Allander & Kirkintilloch)
  • Tuesday – Bowling group (Kirkintilloch) & Mens group (Allander & Kirkintilloch)
  • Wednesday – Womens group (Kirkintilloch & Allander) & Midpoint autism drop in (Bishopbriggs)
  • Thursday – Manga, Anime, Gaming and Sci-fi Society (Kirkintilloch)

Eligibility: Over 16 and with an ASN. If you require 1:1 support then you must provide this.

Outlook

The Outlook team work across the whole of EDC. The service provides community-based support for people with a moderate learning disability (18+) who do not require to access the specialist resources that are used by people with more severe learning disabilities. 

What can they offer? Outlook currently support groups of service users to meet in the Allander Resource Centre and Allander Leisure Centre, Bishopbriggs Memorial Hall, Hillhead Community Centre and Milngavie Community Centre. There are also walking groups, swimming groups, cooking groups and a Culture group. Outlook staff continue to provide 1:1 support in the community for those service users who cannot attend group activities due to their high levels of anxiety.

Eligibility criteria: People who attend Outlook for community-based support will have been assessed by social work as meeting the council’s eligibility criteria and it will have been agreed that this type of support best meets your support requirements. You will not be able to access this service if you do not have a social work package.

Allander Resource Centre

The Allander Resource Centre is a purpose-built centre designed to meet the needs of adults with severe and complex learning disabilities living within East Dunbartonshire.

What can they offer? The centre has specialist facilities such as a sensory room, physio room, quiet rooms, a low arousal room, hydrotherapy pool and Rebound facility. There is also a large multi-purpose area that serves as a dining room as well as an art room, dance studio, music room and computer room and other multi-purpose areas. Service users can access some of the facilities within the Allander Leisure Centre including the swimming pool and Games Hall. There is also a sensory garden outside as well as raised beds which are maintained by service users in the gardening groups.

Eligibility criteria: This service is for adults (18+) who have severe and complex learning disabilities including those with profound learning disabilities (PMLD). People who attend the Allander Resource Centre will have been assessed by social work as meeting the council’s eligibility criteria and it will have been agreed that this type of support best meets your support requirements.
