There are a number of different social work teams within East Dunbartonshire Council.

These are: 

  • Children and Families 
  • Children with Disabilities
  • Joint Learning Disability Team 
  • Mental Health Team 
  • Adult East 
  • Adult West.

Each team has different roles and eligibility criteria. Click on the link on the left to find out more about each team.

Children and families

The Children and Families Social Work team can be accessed when there are welfare or protection concerns.  In addition, an assessment of need can be undertaken for those in need of critical or substantial support.  There is a separate social work team called the ‘Children with Disabilities’ team who should be contacted if the young person has an ASN.

What can they offer? 

The team can offer signposting to local services, including community-based supports.  They also assess and identify any role for Social Work intervention and make appropriate plans with the multi-agency team thereafter.

Children with Disabilities

The Children with Disabilities Social Work team can be accessed by those seeking social work input on behalf of a young person who has an ASN.

What can they offer? 

  • A multi-agency assessment of your child’s needs
  • A Carer’s Assessment
  • Signposting to other services
  • Following initial assessment, they will make a recommendation and direct you to services or supports if required.

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Any child who has a complex disability or significant health needs which impacts negatively on family life, or there is a high risk of family breakdown
  • High level of needs or disability requiring constant supervision
  • Severely challenging behaviour arising from a diagnosed or suspected disability.

Joint Learning Disability Team

The Joint Learning Disability Team (JLDT) consists of various different health teams who work together to provide a joined-up service. Within the team include Social Workers, Learning Disability Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Psychologists. 

What can they offer? Following an assessment, the team will work out what support is needed. This can include practical, emotional and social support, such as: 

  • Conducting an assessment to determine whether the person is eligible for funding support through Self Directed Support (can be used to fund things like Day Services or a Personal Assistant) 
  • Referrals for eating and drinking assessments 
  • Attending reviews 
  • Conducting Functional Assessments 
  • Psychological interventions 
  • Supporting you to find positive opportunities in the community to help you to try new experiences and meet new people (ie. Outreach groups)
  • Discussing housing options available
  • Looking into any options available for respite for parents and carers

Community Mental Health Team

The Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) consists of different departments and specialties – some are based in Social Work and some based in Health teams. 

Social work Mental Health- The Social Work Mental Health team consists of Mental Health Officers, Social Workers and Social Work Assistants. This team provides a range of supports to individuals with severe and enduring mental illness. They can conduct an assessment to determine any additional support that the person needs and whether the person is eligible for funding support through Self Directed Support. They also oversee mental health-based hospital admissions and planning for hospital discharge. Eligibility for the Social Work Mental Health team covers those in substantial or critical need of support. The Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) is a multidisciplinary team comprising of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapists, peer support workers and cognitive behaviour therapists. The CMHT works with adults who have severe or enduring mental health difficulties and provides medical interventions to promote positive mental health. There are 2 CMHT’s that offer support within the East Dunbartonshire area, which are based in KHCC, Kirkintilloch (Larkfield Resource Centre) and Drumchapel (Arndale Resource Centre). Access to these services is via GP referral only.

The Primary Care Mental Health Team (PCMHT) provides short term, changed based, psychological therapies for mild to moderate common mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, mixed depression and anxiety, adjustment disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), that require only one professional. The Crisis Team supports those who are experiencing current mental health crisis. They operate seven days a week from Monday-Friday between 5-8pm and Saturday–Sunday between 9am-5pm. To request support from this service, call - 0141 800 0300.

Adult East and West Social Work

Social Work localities East and West work with people aged 18 years and over who do not fall into the other specialist Social Work teams. People get in touch through the duty system who are then screened, and more information is gathered to determine if they meet eligibility criteria. 

What can they offer? They provide statutory interventions, undertake assessments, implement support plans and use powers within legislation when required, e.g. Adults With Incapacity. If you are unsure whether you would meet criteria for this provision, you can still contact the team to make an enquiry and if you are not eligible then they will signpost you to more appropriate services.
